My phone is buzzing in my pocket. I’m in the middle of a meeting but I can’t resist, so I take a quick peek. It’s rude, I know, but six texts from my wife! Not sure what it is but it’s probably more urgent than “how’s your day?” but not quite “danger Will Robinson.”
A few minutes later the meeting ends, handshakes all around and back to the day. The urgent news? We’re having company tonight, unexpected, and we have a lot of work to do to get ready.
Family—sisters and cousins—are the usual drop ins. But sometimes it’s neighbors, or friends in town unexpectedly. Oh, and it’s Friday night, so we better have dinner AND drinks. Six people are coming and you know no one’s getting a reservation at 7:30pm on a Friday in DC!
At times like this, we have two go to options: tacos or pasta. We’re going tacos tonight because it’s finally warm enough to make guests stand outside watching the grill.
When you’re rushing, it’s best to be as efficient as possible. So, a quick stop at the market for steak and I’m home chopping veg and salting the meat and all that prep. My wife is picking up the house and straightening the rugs and wiping up the counters…
Doorbell rings! BZZZ BZZZ.
Shoot! Why is someone ALWAYS early?
“Hi! Welcome! No, you’re not too early, come on in!”
“Hi! Would you like a drink? I’m just whipping up a little punch…”
